Accessibility

We want everybody to be able to use this site, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard instead of a mouse, or a larger text size. This page says where we are, and it is honest about what is not fixed yet.

What we build toward

We build this site toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1, Level AA. That is the standard most people mean when they talk about an accessible website. We treat it as the goal we are working toward, not as a finish line we have crossed.

What we have done

Every page starts with a "Skip to content" link, so keyboard users can jump past the menu.
You can see where you are when you move through the page with the Tab key. Every control shows a clear outline when it has focus.
Every form field has a real label attached to it, not just grey example text inside the box.
When a form field has a problem, the message is tied to that field, it is announced out loud, and it is never shown by color alone.
Images carry text that describes what they show, and images that are only decoration are skipped by screen readers.
If your device is set to reduce motion, the moving pieces on this site hold still.
Spanish wording inside an English page is marked as Spanish, so a screen reader pronounces it correctly.
Each page has one main heading, and the headings below it go in order.

We do not use an accessibility overlay widget, the kind that adds a floating accessibility button to a page. Those tools do not fix the underlying problems, and many screen reader users prefer sites without them. We fix the site itself instead.

What is still not right

These are real gaps we know about. We are listing them instead of hiding them.

Some brand colors do not have enough contrast

Our gold and our burnt orange are the colors of the business, and changing them would mean redesigning the whole site. We chose to tell you about them instead. Measured against the guideline, which asks for 4.5 to 1 on normal text and 3 to 1 on large text:

The small gold capital letters that label a section, such as "WHAT WE OFFER" on the home page, measure about 2.2 to 1 up to 2.6 to 1. The heading directly below each one says the same thing in dark text.
Large gold numbers and headings, such as the rental price on the vendors page and "Open Mon to Sat" on the home page, measure about 2.3 to 1 up to 2.6 to 1. The same prices and hours are repeated in dark text elsewhere on those pages.
The gold "Explore events" link on the events page measures about 2.6 to 1. The same page is reachable from the word "Events" in the main menu and from "Upcoming events" in the footer, both of which have normal contrast.
Burnt orange small labels, and the "See Our Vendors" link, measure about 4.1 to 1 up to 4.4 to 1, just under the 4.5 to 1 mark. The vendors page is also in the main menu and the footer.
White text on our orange event badges, such as "LIVE MUSIC" and "COMMUNITY", measures about 4.2 to 1. Each badge repeats a word that also appears in the event description right next to it.
The small white word "EXPLORE" on a gold badge on the event center page measures about 3.2 to 1. It is a decorative label, and the heading under it says the same thing.

Pieces we do not control

The map on the contact page is built by another company and we cannot change how it behaves with a keyboard or a screen reader. The full address and written driving directions are on that same page, so you never need the map to find us.
The spam screening badge on the form pages is also built by another company. If it gets in your way, call us and we will take your information over the phone.

Switching languages

The Spanish version of this site is produced by a language switch in your browser rather than by separate Spanish web addresses. If you have JavaScript turned off, you will see the English version. We are looking at proper Spanish addresses for a future update.
